RE: Oscars 2021
Netflix halted all productions and their acquisition game will be hurt with the lack of festivals.
I suspect this will be a time when the studios will unleash all the canned and long-delayed stuff they don’t know what to do with. |

RE: Oscars 2021
The Academy is currently evaluating how this pandemic will impact eligibility for next year's Oscars.
It seems there are two main things being considered at least just for this year: Allowing films that debut on VOD to be eligible or moving the eligibility deadline by a few weeks or a combination of the two. |

RE: Oscars 2021
New rules for the 2021 Oscars.
Two major points: - Films that premiere on streaming and VOD are eligible for Oscars....at least only for this year. - Sound Editing and Sound Mixing are now combined to just Best Sound. |

RE: Oscars 2021
The filmed performance of Hamilton is gonna drop on Disney+ on July 3rd. It was slated for a theatrical release in 2021. So if I understand it correctly, this could make TECHNICALLY eligible for Oscars this year.
Will Disney submit it for consideration? It's actually not unprecedented for a filmed stage performance to be nominated for an Oscar. Give 'Em Hell, Harry was a filmed one-man show which got James Whitmore a Best Actor nomination. My guess: Disney will submit it but the Academy will rule that it's only eligible for Picture and the acting categories. |

RE: Oscars 2021
I don't think there will be Oscars this year. I think a combo eligibility with the next ceremony in 2022.

RE: Oscars 2021
Academy considering postponing 2021 Oscars.
I think there WILL be an Oscars this year. I don't think they will cancel it altogether and just lump 2020 and 2021 films in one ceremony like what you're saying (which would be the worst case scenario). I think they will only postpone it by a few weeks to allow more eligible contenders to come out: Maybe March or even April. They actually used to have the Oscars during April so it's not unprecedented. |

RE: Oscars 2021
Yeah...I just think there will be absolutely no mass gatherings of any kind permitted until a vaccine and/or treatment. So if they extend the eligibility deadline/later ceremony, we are still looking at a virtual ceremony. It will not be the Oscars we know with the red carpet and an auditorium full of people unless there is a postponement of at least a year.

RE: Oscars 2021
I think a social-distance/virtual Oscar ceremony is somewhat a bit more likely than no Oscar ceremony at all (sucks for any first-time nominees, but whatever). My guess is I think the Oscars will be looking at what the Emmys will do.

RE: Oscars 2021
More new Oscar rules but for the 94th Oscars.
- Starting on the 94th, it will be once again be a straight up 10 Best Picture nominees instead of the 5-10 rule. - There will be Academy screenings in their streaming website EVERY QUARTER so smaller, earlier releases can get seen. |
